2016 Tailgating Trends

Posted by

Back in the ’60s tailgating was a picnic basket full of sandwiches and a six-pack of beer an hour or two before a game (usually eaten out of the trunk of a car).

Now, tailgating is an event, with food prepared on portable grills, served on folding chairs and tables, with shade tents, coolers of beer and wine, games, and more. According to the 25th Weber Grill Survey, respondents spend an average of $122 on a tailgate party (and we know plenty who spend more – right?)

Many tailgaters don’t even make it to the game itself – 50% of respondents said they attended a tailgate in the past year but did not go to the game!

The concept of tailgaters and a market for potential sales has emerged into a $20 billion industry, with considerable room for growth (Quoted from Hardware Retailing, March 2015). The products cross over into camping, trips to the beach and other outdoor activities, so for retailers, cross-selling is a great opportunity on higher priced items like tents, tables and portable grills.

Some of the most popular tailgating necessities:

15567_red_angle_3c.jpgChairs – The latest trend information from outdoor furniture retailers show that “consumers are looking for outdoor furniture that emphasizes comfort in a small package, versatility and, on top of that, good looks.” (Quoted from SNews Outdoor, September 15, 2015 “Outdoor Retail Gear Trends: 2016 Camp Furniture.”) The Premium Stripe Chair (15567) offers padded comfort and a cup holder for a long day of tailgating and is versatile for camping, the beach and other sporting events.

26021_black_styledGrills – Sandwiches and chips just don’t cut it anymore. Family grill-masters want to show off their skills at a tailgate on portable grills. The KOOZIE(R) Portable BBQ with Kooler Bag (26021) is ideal for feeding a small crowd.
